The Order of the Garter, the highest order in England, was founded by Edward III in 1348. Its motto, Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame to him who thinks evil of it) supposedly derives from an incident involving a garter dropped on a dance floor by the Countess of Salisbury while dancing with the King.
