Its historic associations and impressive size are
attributes that differentiate this fireback from many
others. The 1588 date, the paired anchors with coiled
ropes and the Tudor rose designs indicate that the
original was cast to commemorate the
defeat of the Spanish armada by the British navy. A
fragment bearing a similar design is in the Mercer
Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Another casting of
this historic fireback is in the Victoria and Albert
Museum, London, England.
Our replica, cast directly from a complete and well
preserved original, is ideal for a large
fireplace.
