The Neptune Fireback pictures the Roman god of the
sea, also known as Poseidon in Greek mythology.
Originally a god of fresh water, or, perhaps, a
protector against drought, his festival —
Neptunalia —was held in July when water was
scarce. The original fireback is French; its history is
unknown.
