A formal type discovered in New Jersey, the Three
Goddesses Fireback is believed to have been owned by
the same family for generations. Obviously English, its
central design is identical to one in the Rochester
Museum, England, where it is dated 1697 and bears the
initials WM, which stand for William of Orange and
Queen Mary. A similar fireback in the Essex Institute,
Salem, Massachusetts, identifies the three goddesses as
Pallas, Juno and Venus. Of a very practical size, the
fireback embodies the arched, embellished top that
distinguishes true firebacks. So faithful is our
casting that the vertical line marking the split in the
original wood pattern is clearly visible.
