Mythological and allegorical subjects were favored
by early iron workers, and the Jupiter Fireback
featuring the supreme Roman deity is typical of their
work. Typical, too, are the Roman capitals with
“I” for “J” and “V”
for “U” as well as the phonetic spelling,
for example, the doubled “T”.
The original is undated, as were many, but the
arched top and vertical shape establish it as having
been cast between 1700 and 1750. Found on an old farm
near Claverack, New York, it may well be a copy of a
Dutch original by a Hudson Valley foundry.
Its innate charm and modest dimensions make it ideal
for a small fireplace or as a decorative accent.
