The original of this stove plate, dated 1758, is by
a wellknown ironmaster of the period. In a fashion
typical of the time, the name has been spelled
phonetically. The quotation, Las(s) Dich das Besse
nich! (Be not overcome by evil), is from Romans
12:21.
Unearthed at the Schultz farm, this plate is
believed to share a similar history with the 1749 stove
plate. With its design
resembling a German bible woodcut, however it is more
characteristic of Pennsylvania German manufacture.
