This 250-year-old plate was originally the front of
a five-plate stove. While the date and design indicate
Pennsylvania German manufacture, the expected biblical
scene is not used. (Identical plates are in the Mercer
Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania.) It was unearthed at
the Schultz farm in Worcester Pennsylvania, adjoining
the Wentz Farmstead, Washington’s headquarters
during the Battle of Germantown. Since there is no
evidence of a five-plate stove at the Schultz farm,
historians believe the plate came from the Wentz
house.
